UPSC conducts the CDSE or Combined Defence Service Examination twice in a year for Permanent and Short Service Commission entries for all three wings of our defence forces i.e. Army,Navy andAir Force. As far as written exam is concerned there are two papers for candidates opting for OTA (Officers’ Training Academy) and Three papers for those who opted for IMA (Indian Military Academy), INA (Indian Naval Academy) or AFA (Air Force Academy).

This year CDS (II) 2013 will take place on 08.09.2013 (08th September 2013) (SUNDAY). The exam will be conducted by (Union Public Service Commission) UPSC. The written exam is conducted to shortlist candidates for SSB Interview, after the exam UPSC will fix separate cut off marks for various academies like AFA, IMA, INA and OTA. Generally cut off marks for AFA is higher that others so candidates opting for AFA must keep it in their mind. Those who qualify the written exam will be called for SSB Interview and there after recommended candidates will be examined for medical fitness and an all India Merit List will be prepared for Various Academies. Only those who make it to merit list will be allowed to join the receptive academy.

IMA / INA / AFA – English (100) + General Knowledge (100) + Mathematics (100) = 300 Marks

OTA – English (100) + General Knowledge (100) = 200 Marks

Let us Discuss the Syllabus for the CDS Exam 2013 which will give you an outline as to what you have to study. Our suggestion is that first of all from the syllabus mark all the topics which you fell extremely easy to learn, and make sure you prepare those topics really well. You should not go for the entire syllabus but it is also important to leave few topics which you might feel are difficult to understand.

English (Code No. 01) – 120 Questions – 100 Marks – 2 Hr – (-0.27) Wrong Answer – (+.83) Correct Answer

The question paper will be designed to test the basic understanding of English language which includes Synonyms, Antonyms, Sentence Improvement, Comprehension, Error Detection and Arranging Sentences.

General Knowledge (Code No. 02) – 120 Questions – 100 Marks – 2 Hr – (-0.27) Wrong Answer – (+.83) Correct Answer

Questions in General Knowledge includes knowledge of current events and of various matters of everyday life and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. Question on History and Geography of India which does not requires any special study will be asked in the exam.

Elementary Mathematics (Code No. 03) – 100 Questions – 100 Marks – 2 Hr – (-0.33) Wrong Answer – (+1) Correct Answer

Number System-Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental Operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, Square roots, Decimal, fractions. Unitary method, time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation. Elementary Number Theory- Division algorithm. Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3,4,5,9 and 11. Multiples and factors. Factorisation Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M. Euclidean algorithm, Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables.

Detailed Syllabus – Mathematics

Algebra

Basic Operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M. Theory of polynomials, Solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and coefficients (Only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear in equations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or in equations in two Variables or quadratic equations in one variable & their solutions. Set language and set notation, rational expressions and conditional identities, Laws of indices.

Trigonometry

Sine x, cosine x, Tangent x when 0 <
x < 90 Values of sin x, cos x and tan x, for x = 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90
Simple trigonometric identities.
Use of trigonometric tables.
Simple cases of heights and distances.

Geometry

Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on (i) Properties of angles at a Point
(ii) Parallel lines, (iii) Sides and angles of a triangle,
(iv) Congruency of triangles,
(v) Similar triangles, (vi) Concurrence of medians and altitudes, (vii) Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square (viii) Circles and its properties including tangents and normal, (ix) Loci.

Mensuration

Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of figures which Can be split up into these figures (Field Book), Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders, surface area and Volume of spheres.

Statistics

Collection and tabulation of statistical data, Graphical representation, frequency Polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts etc. Measures of central tendency.
